While Prequel EU may be easy to get into… the EU from Post ROTJ is a little harder to get your head around because it’s already well established, and there are no movies or TV show’s to refer to.
So here’s some tip’s to breaking into that era.
It’s not a good idea start with Novels that have New Jedi Order (NJO), Dark Nest (DN) or Legacy of the Force (LOTF) in their titles. They may be the more recent titles, but they are set over 21+ years after ROTJ and there are some events that happened before then that are worth knowing about before you take a crack at them.
If you like reading your books in order – The Truce at Bakura, By Kathy Tyers, is the Place to start.
Also for the folk’s reading the books in order (and even if your not, it will pay for you to do it anyway), Find a Novel’s Timeline, these are not that hard to find, online or they can also be found in some of the more recent novels as well, it will tell you what book to read next.
If you want to get to the most recent books quickly, the Book’s you should go for are: Timothy Zahn’s, Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command, Specter of the Past and Vision of the Future, It Also maybe a good idea to check out Kevin J. Anderson’s, Jedi Search, Dark Apprentice and Champion’s of the Force, or alternately Michael Stackpole’s, I Jedi. These novels cover the most important events between ROTJ and The NJO.
It’s also a good idea to get hold of a good Event/Character guide – there are several different ones on the Market – having one will help fill in the gaps… but be careful, for they hold a spoiler a plenty, especially for the older material.
(In my opinion it’s best to take Novel/Guide approach to get up to the more recent books quickly. You can always go back and read the book’s you missed.)
That should give most beginners a good start.
