(Since I Haven’t Read Betrayal at this moment in time, some of my beliefs with what happened in Allston’s Novel may be wrong… and if I am, feel free to correct me)
You have got to hand it to Lumiya, she is one cunning witch.
She say’s she’s not interested getting back at Luke, and yet that’s exactly what she’s doing… by helping Jacen take the path of darkness and that in many way’s is the ultimate revenge, by destroying Luke’s hope’s for is nephew and son – That is if Ben stay’s with Jacen.
In those five year’s Jacen spent searching for Force knowledge he must have lost most of his common sense. If he thinks becoming a Sith will help heal the galaxy, and make things better for his family, He is deluded, Anakin had that same sort of idea – and look where that got him. That Fact isn’t helped by the fact that Jacen thinks his future is the same as Anakin Skywalker’s.
Actually if Anakin Skywalker was still alive he probably would have already pulled Jacen aside, dropped his birches, and tanned his hide like cheap leather, saying something along the line’s of: “Just because I screwed up my Life, doesn’t mean you have to go and screw up your’s.”
Jacen’s behaviour, however, has not gone on unnoticed, Luke’s been venting his concern, his twin doesn’t trust him anymore, people are comparing him to Vader, Han thinks he’s turning into Monster and Leia has the same sort of opinion, but the line that sums it up actually came from Zekk: “Who’s this shapeshifter, and what has he done with Jacen?”
In fact, the only reason why Luke hasn’t pulled Jacen aside and given Jacen the butt kicking he’s asking for, is because he’s got nothing hard to use against him, and Jacen knows this.
Now I know people change, but the change’s Jacen went though after the Vong war, have not been for the better. He’s basically told his friend’s and family that my way is the right way and to go to hell. What he doesn’t realize fully is by doing this he is going to loose everything he ever really cared about and end up totally alone.
I don’t know what Tenel Ka thinks of Jacen’s behaviour, we will find out in Denning’s novel, but she and Allana are in a lot danger, I just hope Tenel Ka is ready for it.
Jacen want’s to hang onto Ben and turn him to the dark side, as well, but Benny Boy is starting to doubt Jacen. He knows something’s wrong with Jacen and things are not adding up around him… the death of Boba Fett’s daughter, just added another question mark to Jacen’s actions and Ben doesn’t like it.
That fact is only enhanced by the fact that Ben turned to his parents for help, after his first kill and is planing to confront Jacen over the recent events – Ben on the whole is a good kid… but a good kid in a pressure cooker, if he’s able to fight off Jacen’s attempts to turn him to the Dark Side - he’ll be a lot better for it.
Also, Jaina should’ve just gone ahead and told her parent’s about the court martial, somehow I don’t think she would’ve got the ‘I’m disappointed with you’ speech…
Actually reading into Jacen’s mind was disturbing. I can see what Traviss meant by wanting to wash her mind out after writing his character’s P.O.V.
Which lead’s into the question – does anyone still think all Jacen’s actions are still justified?
I don’t (I say this while I know some people will still support him 100%).
Now enough on Jacen for now – you can talk about him until the cow’s come home, his story been one of driving force’s in LOTF – and onto the other two main stories in Bloodlines, the Corellian problem and Boba Fett.
Thrackan Sal-Solo got what was coming for him, he decided to make himself a big pain in the ass - so much so that his own family wanted him strung up a tree backwards – and in the end pissed off the bounty hunter’s he asked to wack Han and his family and got shot in the head for all his trouble.
Unfortunately Sal-Solo’s death failed to stop the Corellian problem from getting out of control. Corellia’s dynamite, and the GA’s reaction has only lit the fuse… what Luke and most of the other Jedi have been doing is trying to figure out how to stamp out the fuse, but a certain sith wanabe, has not been helping matter’s any.
While it was interesting to see Boba Fett again his story really didn’t seem to have much of an important role until he got to Corellia, it was interesting seeing him actually working with Han though.
Bloodline’s was a good afternoon read, while it’s not recommended as book to break into Post ROTJ period, it is a must for any Star Wars EU fan that already knows their post ROTJ.
8/10
